TIRANA, August 10/ATA/ The euro hit a new all-time low against the lek at 93.07 lekë, dropping 0.12 lekë since the weekend per Bank of Albania data. Down 3.8% in 2026 and 34% from its 2011 peak of 140.4 lekë, the currency reached its weakest level since physical introduction.

Driven by strong foreign inflows from tourism, remittances, and investments, the euro’s multi-year depreciation against the lek has prompted ongoing intervention by the Bank of Albania. Between January 2024 and March 2026, the central bank purchased roughly €2.2 billion to cushion the lek’s upward pressure, culminating in a first-quarter record of nearly €140 million in 2026 alone.

TIRANA, May 15 /ATA/ During a roundtable discussion on the topic “The Government of Insecurity – Rama’s Failure and the Opposition’s Alternative”, organized by the Security Department of the DP, Chairman Sali Berisha focused on the security situation in the country.

“Life, property, and safety are non-negotiable, yet the Albanian citizen faces a crisis of security that, outside of Haiti, is unmatched. From food safety to personal data, the state is failing its core mission to protect”, said Berisha.

Berisha argued that Albanians are fleeing a ‘narco-state’—a term he claims is widely accepted by international experts—seeking safety elsewhere because the government is, in his view, a captive entity in the hands of criminal networks.

The opposition leader also raised concerns about the devaluation of the euro in Albania, which he linked to the entry of drug money into the economy.

“In 10 years, the euro has depreciated by 32%. Albania is the world champion for the devaluation of the euro. The second country is Mexico with 17%, due to drug cartels,” he said.

According to Berisha, the devaluation of the euro has brought serious consequences for the Albanian economy and exports.

“It has wiped out any profits for exporters and forced them to close their businesses. Tens of thousands of Albanians have lost their jobs,” he said.

Berisha also stressed that the devaluation of the euro has increased costs for foreign tourists.

“Albania’s beaches are half empty even at the height of the tourist season because the devaluation of the euro has increased prices for tourists,” he said. /gj.m/j.p/p.s./

TIRANA, June 17 /ATA/ The Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku expressed today her concern about the economic consequences that are accompanying the depreciation of the Euro in the market after the electoral process.

According to her, this depreciation of the Euro value is a reiterated phenomenon and has no real economic explanation.

“This indicates a large amount of money in euros being put into circulation during the campaign, for which there is no economic justification,” Tabaku stated.

Tabaku emphasized that the impact of this depreciation is direct on three important pillars of the Albanian economy: the facon sector, agriculture and families that rely on emigrant remittances.

She warned that, if urgent measures are not taken, this situation could turn into a social and economic blow for the country.

MP Tabaku pointed out that the depreciation of the euro is not related to positive developments in the economy, but is a consequence of money laundering, which has influenced the artificial increase of the hard currency in the market.

“The Albanian economy needs concrete answers, not manipulations with monetary turnover before the elections,” Tabaku said.

She called for a package of support for the facon sector, concrete policies for agriculture and real measures to help families that live on remittances. /a.gj/r.e/a.f/p.s./
