TIRANA, March 5 /ATA/ – The Castle of Ishmi, an important Ottoman-era defence stronghold in the municipality of Durrës, is the latest in a series of historic and cultural heritage sites across Albania being rehabilitated under the European Union-funded EU4Culture programme.

Built between 1572 to 1574, the castle’s ruins were designated first category monument in 1977.

It is worth noting that the grave of one of the most important and influential Albanian painters, Ibrahim Kodra, who was born in Ishem, is located in front of the Castle’s main entrance.

The Minister of Culture Elva Margariti said Sunday that the Castle will undergo complete rehabilitation under the EU4Culture, a programme funded by the EU and being implemented by UNOPS, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture.

The Castle of Ishmi overlooks an immense plain of Ishëm and the Kruja-Dajt mountains on the east, the delta of the Ishëm river, the Cape of Rodon and part of the Adriatic sea coast on the west.

Because of its strategic position in the past, the Castle served as an important Ottoman defence stronghold. Built between 1572 to 1574, it was widely used by the Ottoman soldiers to control and protect the roads from the insurgents and prevent unauthorized trade with the Venetian Republic.
