PRISHTINA, Aug 20 /ATA/ – The European Union on Wednesday called on Kosovo’s political parties to respect a Constitutional Court ruling and swiftly constitute the new parliament, after lawmakers again failed to break a months-long deadlock.

The EU Office in Kosovo told Radio Free Europe that it was “closely following developments related to the constitution of the Assembly and the formation of the Government,” stressing that timely establishment of institutions is essential for reforms to improve citizens’ quality of life.

Today’s parliamentary session collapsed after neither of the governing Vetëvendosje’s candidates for speaker – Albulena Haxhiu nor Donika Gërvalla – secured the required 61 votes. The court has given lawmakers until September 18 to complete the process.

The Italian Embassy in Prishtina welcomed Vetëvendosje’s decision to nominate an alternative candidate, calling it “a sign of willingness to make progress,” while major opposition parties (PDK, LDK, AAK) reiterated they would not back nominees tied to the previous government.

Kosovo has been unable to form new institutions since February’s elections, in which Vetëvendosje won 48 of 120 seats, short of an outright majority.

The next parliamentary session is scheduled for Aug. 22.
