TIRANA, June 24 /ATA/ – Albania is working to align its telecommunications infrastructure with European Union standards, aiming to expand fibre-optic networks and advanced 5G coverage nationwide by 2030, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Enea Karakaçi said on Wednesday.

Speaking at an event on urban telecommunications infrastructure, Karakaçi said the government’s goal is to build a “Gigabit Society” in which citizens and businesses have access to high-speed internet across the country.

He said Albania has adopted a legal and regulatory framework to support faster and more secure communications networks, including legislation aligned with the European Electronic Communications Code and measures designed to accelerate broadband deployment through simplified procedures and the “dig once” principle.

Karakaçi said the government has also drafted a new Gigabit Infrastructure Law to further align Albanian legislation with EU rules. The draft is awaiting a no-objection opinion from the European Commission.

To improve connectivity in underserved areas, Albania has secured a 110 million euro broadband infrastructure project under the Western Balkans Investment Framework, including around 35 million euros in EU grant funding.

The project aims to expand broadband access in areas that currently lack adequate coverage, support digital public services and promote economic development, he said.

Karakaçi added that achieving nationwide gigabit connectivity would require continued investment as well as closer cooperation between municipalities, public institutions and network operators.

“We remain focused on achieving these goals and advancing Albania’s digital transformation,” he said.
