TARANTO, April 19 /ATA/- By Gjergji Mima/ Italy’s Minister for European Affairs, Southern Italy, Cohesion Policy, and Italy’s NRRP, Tommaso Foti, stated in an interview with the Albanian Telegraphic Agency that 2030 is the right date for Albania’s accession to the European Union.

In an interview with ATA, Minister Foti remarked during a seminar in Taranto, organized by AMAN (Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies) and the Italian news agency ANSA, in partnership with the Organizing Committee of the 20th Mediterranean Games “Taranto 2026,” Albania and Montenegro are two countries at the forefront of EU membership process.

Foti also touched on the preparations for the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games and the joint projects with our country.

The full interview of the Italian Minister for European Affairs, Southern Italy, Cohesion Policy, and Italy’s NRRP, Tommaso Foti, with ATA.

ATA: Regarding the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games, are there any cultural and sports initiatives lined up in collaboration with Albania for this event?

Minister Foti: The Mediterranean Games are in their 20th edition and are part of a tradition that goes beyond just sports; it represents an embrace of cultures and traditions and a civilization that was once referred to as “Mare Nostrum” or “Our Seas.” It will be a magical moment, not only for Puglia but for all the participating countries and, above all, for those countries that have viewed these Mediterranean Games as a moment of cultural and social growth.

ATA: Regarding regional cooperation between Italy and other countries, such as Albania, could you share any upcoming projects in the near future?

Minister Foti: We believe that Albania is certainly a country with a strong connection to Italy. As you know, we have already established several migration centers, but we also see great potential in strengthening trade relations and tourism between our countries.

ATSH: Regarding Albania’s accession to the European Union, with 2030 set as the target year—do you believe this is an achievable goal for Albania?

Minister Foti: Without a doubt, Albania and Montenegro are the two countries that have successfully completed the initial clusters in the EU accession process. They are currently the best-positioned candidates. There are still areas that require further refinement, especially those that are of particular importance to the European Union. Nevertheless, I believe that 2030 is a realistic and suitable target for Albania’s accession to the EU.

ATSH: After the Taranto 2026 Games, the next edition will be held in Pristina in 2030. Do you think Italy could assist Kosovo with organizing these Games?

Minister Foti: We have never refused to help anyone, and we won’t hold back from offering support to anyone. That said, I must point out that any country wishing to host these Games must have the necessary capacities to carry them out—otherwise, it becomes a difficult task.
