TIRANA, March 17 /ATA/ The German government’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin, told a press conference with Chief of Albanian Diplomacy Olta Xhaçka, that “Albania, the Western Balkans and the prospect of EU membership for the entire region are of strategic importance.”
Underlining that this is a priority of the federal government, Sarrazin also focused on the situation in Ukraine. Putin’s aggression against a sovereign state in Europe shows that the European achievements of recent decades, living in an open area of freedom and well-being, are not taken as a given and that we must re-engage every day to protect and consolidate them. ”

“The protection and consolidation of the EU as an open area of freedom and law is possible only with the inclusion of the Western Balkan countries,” he stressed.
Sarrazin noted that Albania’s foreign and security policies are in line with those of the EU.

“The new Federal Government is convinced that it is in its interest that Albania and North Macedonia take a decisive step forward on the path to EU,” he said.

He further described the relations between the two countries as excellent, adding that, “exactly in these difficult times we are glad that we can consider Albania a reliable partner on the international arena. With its pro-active and constructive role in the United Nations Security Council, Albania – although for the first time part of it – is a driving force there.”

Sarrazin assessed that Albania has made great strides in terms of democracy, rule of law and human rights, as well as the fight against corruption and organized crime. “We see that members of criminal rings and even senior officials have been indicted and convicted. Vetting is making an important contribution to strengthening justice. These are important and very positive steps forward and we are following them very closely. “It’s important to move forward in that direction.”
