TIRANA, Oct 19 /ATA/ – The EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Olivér Várhelyi stated that the delay in official launch of accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia has had a negative impact on European Union’s credibility as he presented the 2021 EU enlargement package and the Commission reports on the candidate and potential candidate countries for EU accession to the members of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) on Tuesday.

“Delay in official launch of accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia had a negative impact on EU’s credibility. Pending bilateral issues between North Macedonia and Bulgaria need to be solved as a matter of urgency,” Várhelyi said via Twiter.

“Western Balkans are part of the same Europe. We share the same history, the same continent, the same interests and the same values. EU is not complete without the Western Balkans,” he stated.

“It’s crucial that EU member states adopt negotiating frameworks so first intergovernmental conferences are held as soon as possible, still this year. This is essential for EU’s credibility,” Várhelyi said.
