TIRANA, Oct 15 /ATA/ – Albania has seen a sharp rise in the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in the first nine months of 2025, marking a significant shift toward more sustainable transportation and contributing to a measurable drop in carbon emissions.

According to official data, 3,901 electric vehicles were registered from January to September this year – an 80% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Authorities say the growth reflects increasing awareness among both individuals and businesses about the environmental impact of transport.

Electric vehicles with zero mileage accounted for 39.9% of all new zero-kilometer vehicle registrations during the period, up from 28.2% in 2024, 25% in 2023, and just 7.2% in 2022 – highlighting a steady upward trend.

Beyond registration figures, officials point to the environmental benefits as a key achievement. From January to September 2025 alone, EV usage is estimated to have prevented over 13 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions – the equivalent of planting more than 452,000 trees.

The progress strengthens Albania’s commitment to sustainable development goals and is expected to support further clean transport policies in the years ahead.

TIRANA, November 3/ATA/ Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro said today that Albania got committed in the climate summit in Glasgow for 20.9% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, thus joining the global initiative.

In a TV interview Mirela Kumbaro said that this is a very important event, not just for us and for the continent; it is on a global level.

“Although Albania is not a big polluter or better to say no polluter at all because we have no industry, we have 100% renewable energy only based on water resources and while we are trying and developing other initiatives such as wind or photovoltaic energy sources, we must understand that Albania is not outside this scheme because it is part of those countries that are experiencing major climate change. We want to be a proactive victim,” she said.

Kumbaro added that Albania is a country with 100% renewable energy, but this means that when there is drought we stand with our eyes on the sky and when it rains we pray for not having floods.

“These meetings are a very good moment to discuss and debate how the contributions made by big countries, big multinational industries to help other countries that without being polluters, suffer their pollution. And here it is not just a matter of chemical or industrial but it is a matter of how solidarity is organized across the world between countries that have less financial means, that have a less developed technical capacity, other countries that are even poorer and exchange of these experiences is extraordinary “, she said./j.p/p.s./
