Prime Minister Edi Rama shared images showing the ongoing work on construction of the road, saying that 40% of the infrastructure investment project has already completed.

“Over 40% of the construction work has completed. The road will shorten the distance and will become a four-lane interurban road as part of the Corridor VIII project,” PM Rama said.

Third stage of work on the 50.12-km road section is underway on construction of two new 32-meter high and 200-meter long bridges over Shkumbin River.

Elbasan-Qafë Thanë road segment is part of Corridor VIII project and is considered one of the most important roads in the country as it will connect Durrës–Elbasan–Librazhd–Qafë Thanë road to further stretch to North Macedonia and Bulgaria.

The Elbasan- Qafë Thanë road, together with the highway between the coastal city of Durres, Prishtina and Nish in Serbia, will ultimately provide the new Durres commercial seaport the long-awaited strategic role as a key node in the transport corridor between the East and the West.

The road project is being built over a new trail along the Shkumbin River bank and it will also provide an ultimate solution to the problems caused due to the lack of investment projects to rehabilitate the river’s bed. This project will also have direct impact on local economy, helping in improving living conditions for local residents in the surrounding areas, which will be provided access to the administrative centres and national roads. The scenic route will reveal the area’s panoramic landscape.
