PRISTINA, June 21 /ATA/ – The European Commission spokesman Peter Stano said Wednesday that neither Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, nor Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic have confirmed attendance in a crisis meeting in Brussels this week.

“We have said a lot about our expectations, the potential consequences and steps. The main goal is that the meeting takes place in Brussels, but I have nothing to announce regarding this issue,” Stano said in a press conference.

Stano said that he can’t confirm a date for the meeting called by the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell last week.

“We are waiting and we very much hope that a meeting date and modalities can be set. We have no time to waste. Now is the time for action, not for words and speculation,” Stano said.

Diplomatic sources told Radio Free Europe that meeting could take place on June 22 or 23, but they also suggested that Kurti and Vucic may not meet face to face, but instead hold bilateral meetings with Borrell.

PRISTINA, June 15 /ATA/ – The European Commission spokesman Peter Stano denied Thursday that the European Union was imposing sanctions on Kosovo, saying a series of restrictive measures were imposed instead to demonstrate that the EU is serious about de-escalation.

The EU reiterated its appeal on Kosovo and Serbia do urgently deescalate the situation in northern Kosovo.

The EC spokesperson said that the EU still expects Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti to take the required steps towards de-escalation of the situation.

At a press conference, Stano underlined that the restrictive measures are temporary and they can either be reduced or removed. According to the EC spokesperson, the measures include suspension of invitations for Kosovo’s participation in high-level events and bilateral visits by the EU and member states, as well as financial cooperation with Kosovo.

Stano said that introducing these measures was not easy for the EU.

“However, these measures were taken after it became clear that no steps to improve the situation were undertaken. We use such measures to show that the EU is serious when saying it expects de-escalation of the situation,” he said.

PRISTINA, June 14 / ATA/- The European Commission spokesman Peter Stano told KosovaPress news agency on Wednesday that the Commission was considering “an emergent matter” the situation in Kosovo following the kidnap of three Kosovo police officers by Serbian forces earlier on Wednesday.

Stano said that the Commission was in continued contact with authorities in Kosovo and Serbia, as well as with the KFOR mission to verify the events on the border between the two countries.

“We are in contact with both sides, as well as with KFOR, to determine what has exactly happened,” Stano told KosovaPress through a written answer.

European Union has called for self-restraint that could further flare up tensions.

“We call on both Kosovo and Serbia to refrain from any action or reaction that could contribute to further tensions. We repeat the EU appeal for immediate and decisive de-escalation,” the EC spokesperson said.

Kosovo Police announced earlier that the three officers were kidnapped deep in the territory of the Republic of Kosovo on the border area in north of the country.

Police said that the three officers went missing during a patrol aimed at preventing the illegal use of roads for smuggling.
