TIRANA, May 2 /ATA/ – The Black Drin River is increasingly emerging as a destination for adventure tourism, attracting growing numbers of domestic and foreign visitors seeking water sports and outdoor experiences in northeastern Albania.

Rafting has become one of the newest additions to the tourism offer in the northeastern region of Dibër, further expanding the area’s appeal for adventure enthusiasts and nature travelers.

Prime Minister Edi Rama on Saturday shared images marking the opening of the rafting season in Dibër, describing the experience as a unique combination of adrenaline, wild landscapes, and the untouched beauty of the region.

With its scenic valley and fast-flowing waters, the Black Drin offers favorable conditions for rafting and is increasingly being viewed as a promising destination for the development of adventure tourism in Albania.

The river originates from Lake Ohrid at an altitude of 695 meters above sea level before flowing through North Macedonia and entering Albanian territory near the city of Dibër. Stretching a total of 149 kilometers, including 56 kilometers within North Macedonia, the river winds through mountainous terrain and partially forms the border between the two countries.

Near Kukës, the Black Drin merges with the White Drin to form the Drin River, which eventually flows into the Adriatic Sea.

As Albania continues to diversify its tourism sector beyond coastal destinations, the Black Drin is increasingly positioning itself as a destination where adventure tourism and unspoiled nature converge.

TIRANA, April 3 /ATA/ – Minister of Environment Sofjan Jaupaj and his Kosovar counterpart, Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Fitore Pacolli, signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday to establish unified cross-border monitoring mechanisms for the Drin River.

Jaupaj described the meeting as a significant step in Albania-Kosovo cooperation on water resource management. Under the memorandum, both countries will coordinate field activities, exchange data, and jointly address water quality challenges along the river.

“Together with Minister Pacolli, we agreed to build unified monitoring mechanisms, share data, and coordinate efforts on both sides of the border to tackle water quality issues,” Jaupaj said.

He added that joint European-funded projects could bring investment, expertise, and sustainable solutions to the entire Drin River basin.

“This new stage goes beyond administrative boundaries, establishing a model of cooperation where nature protection and sustainable development advance alongside the wellbeing of citizens and biodiversity,” Jaupaj said.
