The holiday lights have been installed in all public and private spaces like never before, putting on an amazing and colourful display in the city of “one over one windows.”

Prime Minister Edi Rama took to the social media on Monday to share images of the Mangalem neighbourhood on the Christmas night.

“Berat, a magical display of lights, colours, history and sounds over the houses in Mangalem neighbourhood,” PM Rama said.

The two bridges over the Osum River, namely the Gorica Bridge and the Suspended Bridge, are decked out in colourful festive lights, creating a rainbow-like reflection over the river.

Berat Municipality has put the traditional Christmas tree in the area between museum neighbourhoods of Mangalem and Gorice this year, with the twinkling lights covering the entire city.

Berat, around 70 km from Tirana, is one of the most beautiful towns in Albania and the Balkan Peninsula. Included on UNESCO’s world heritage list, Berat is the best well-preserved Ottoman-era city in Eastern Europe.

The images were displayed as part of events to celebrate the International Day for Monuments and Archaeological Sites.

Every year on April 18, people celebrate World Heritage Day, also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites.

This day is dedicated to promoting the importance of cultural heritage and raising awareness about the need to preserve historical sites and monuments across the globe, approved by UNESCO’s 22nd General Conference in 1983.

World Heritage Day encourages us to celebrate all the world’s cultures, and to bring awareness to important cultural monuments and sites, and to espouse the importance of preserving the world’s cultures.

The discovery concerns a dedication related to the city’s official name colonia Scodranorum.

Due to the impossibility of access to visit it on the site, as this object remains all the time covered by water, it was managed to reproduce a copy of it.

Thanks to cooperation of the Albanian-Polish Mission and the Regional Directorate of the Cultural Heritage of Shkodra, there was realized the reproduction of the inscription, carefully worked by the specialist of Regional Directorate of the Cultural Heritage of Shkodra Petrit Bilali, and the display of the artifact for visitors in the antiquities pavilion in the Castle Museum, accompanied by the relevant information for the visitors.

During 2011-2017 period, the Albanian-Polish mission carried out research into the traces of ancient Shkodra and brought to light amazing discoveries on the location of the city, its urbanization as well as the defense system of the city in its lower part. /r.e/p.s./
