PRISHTINA, Aug 3 /ATA/ – A second mass grave believed to contain the remains of victims of the 1998-99 Kosovo war has been discovered in northern Kosovo, about 10 km from another site where excavation and recovery operations are still under way, acting Interior Minister Xhelal Sveçla said on Monday.

The grave was found in the village of Jabuka, in the municipality of Zubin Potok, shortly after investigators uncovered human remains at another mass grave in the nearby village of Kalludra.

Acting Interior Minister said the discovery was the result of work by the Kosovo Police, war crimes investigators, the Kosovo Intelligence Agency, the Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Prosecutor’s Office.

“I thank the Kosovo Police, the relevant war crimes investigation units, the Kosovo Intelligence Agency, the Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Kosovo Prosecutor’s Office for their work in investigating and identifying these locations,” he said in a social media post.

Sveçla accused Serbia of withholding information on people who went missing during the war and of intimidating and prosecuting its own citizens who cooperate with efforts to locate mass graves.

He also accused Belgrade of glorifying military units that he said were responsible for atrocities committed during the conflict, and urged international partners to condemn and sanction Serbia.

“Without such a response, any progress toward justice will be impossible, and Serbia will continue to undermine peace in the Western Balkans every day,” Sveçla said.

He said Kosovo’s institutions remained committed to determining the fate of all those killed or who remain missing from the war and to bringing those responsible for wartime crimes to justice.

TIRANA, June 23 /ATA/ Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a monumental temple in Bushati, just south of Shkodra, dating back to the 4th–3nd centuries BC.

The recent discovery of a monumental temple is one of the most important findings from ongoing excavations at an ancient Illyrian settlement. The site has been studied for years by a joint Albanian-Polish expedition directed by Saimir Shpuza.

The 20 hectare site is enclosed by a fortification system, making it comparable in size to Shkodër and Lezhë from the same era.

The temple’s location at the highest point of the city, overlooking Zadrima, Shkodra and Lezha plains, shows the significance of this structure in the organization of ancient urban space.

Unlike Shkodra and Lezha, which have had continuous habitation and changes over the centuries, this site has preserved more elements of its ancient structure, creating opportunities to better understand the organization of a city of this period.

Bushati archaeological site has now been declared a protected archaeological area, guaranteeing the further preservation of the structures and evidence that are revealing the history of this ancient city. /r.e/p.s./

TIRANA, Sept 25 /ATA/ – Archaeologists in southern Albania have uncovered a previously unknown defensive wall belonging to the lower city of ancient Amantia, believed to date back to the 3rd century BCE, officials announced on Thursday.

The discovery was made during recent excavations at the Amantia Archaeological Park, near the coastal city of Vlorë.

According to Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, the find sheds new light on the urban and public organization of the Illyrian settlement.

“This is an entirely new element for archaeologists,” Gonxhja wrote in a social media post, noting that the wall likely remained in use until the 6th century CE, when it was destroyed.

In addition to the wall, the archaeological team has conducted urgent restoration work on monumental tombs and other vulnerable structures within the park, aiming to protect them from environmental damage such as frost and rainfall.

The new findings and conservation efforts are part of a broader initiative to enhance the archaeological landscape of the Amantia site – once a key center of Illyrian civilization – and to preserve it for both scholarly research and public tourism.

TIRANA, Sept 2 /ATA/- Archaeologists have uncovered Albania’s first Roman-era monumental tomb in the village of Strikçan, near Bulqiza town in the country’s northeast, the Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation, Blendi Gonxhja, said on Tuesday.

The Roman-era tomb was discovered during the research project Archaeological Investigations in the Bulqiza Valley, led by the Institute of Archaeology. It features a large funerary structure measuring approximately 9 by 6 metres, including a 2.4-metre-high burial chamber and rare architectural and epigraphic elements.

A bilingual inscription found at the site is dedicated to the deceased, named Gellianus, and to the god Jupiter. “This is the first inscription of its kind ever discovered in the Dibra region,” Minister Blendi Gonxhja said.

The complex includes three distinct spaces: the burial chamber, an antechamber, and a monumental staircase. Archaeologists also recovered fragments of grave goods, including glass vessels, bone objects, weapons, and textiles woven with gold thread, suggesting the high social status of the deceased.

Experts believe the structure is a mausoleum, marking a significant contribution to the study of Roman hinterlands in Albania.

Due to its importance, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, in cooperation with the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Tirana and the Institute of Archaeology, will initiate procedures to place the site under preliminary protection.

The Ministry, along with the relevant institutions, said it would continue supporting further archaeological research in the area.

TIRANA, August 16/ATA/ Lini, the picturesque village on the shores of Lake Ohrid, about 22 km from Pogradec, is among the most popular, especially among foreign tourists.

After the most recent extraordinary archaeological discoveries, where Lini is considered the earliest stilt dwelling ever discovered in Europe, it is attracting even more foreign tourists.

ATA team visited Lini. Mayor of Pogradec Ilir Xhakolli confirmed to ATA that, “The discovery of the approximately 8,000-year-old stilt dwellings in Lini has influenced the increase in the number of tourists, especially foreign ones.”

As you enter the tourist village of Lini, what every tourist wants to visit is the Basilica of Lini.

“During this season, 4,735 tourists visited the Basilica of Lin, of whom 3,298 are foreigners and 1,437 are locals. The location on top of the hill makes it even more interesting, as tourists who see this cultural monument are also faced with the picturesque view offered from there,” said Xhakolli.

Mayor Xhakolli announced that, “In Lin, there is a project that is being implemented for the sewage treatment and the construction of a museum for the discoveries made recently regarding the 8,000-year-old stilt settlements”.

Also, Xhakolli said that, “The village of Lin is part of the 100 villages government project that carries intervention in the infrastructure of this village”.

In Lin, in recent years have been built a series of guesthouses, welcoming hundreds of tourists from all over the world.

Rozeta Bicja has transformed her house in the center of Lin for 14 years into a guesthouse that she has called “The House of Flowers”.

“Tourists to Lin come from all over the world, but this year more have come from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, England, the USA, etc. They like the guesthouse more because we have preserved the traditional stone house”, Bicja told ATA.

Bicaj emphasized that, “Our family has preserved generation after generation the ethnographic costumes and the hand-woven carpets”.

According to her, tourists also really like the gastronomy of the area.

“Among the most popular dishes among tourists are certainly pie and the spotted lake trout dish, which are cooked by Pogradec housewives”, said Bicaj. /k.s/j.p/p.s./

TIRANA, October 23 /ATA/ In the territory of the Ancient Amphitheater of Durrës, there is discovered a ceramic kiln which is believed to date back to Late Antiquity.

The discovery was made by the Italian-Albanian expedition. The discovery was made in the western part of the amphitheater, while the excavations are being deepened further in order to fully discover what the underground contains.

This discovery happens a few days after the discovery of a rare mosaic while opening the foundations for the reconstruction of the “Gjergj Kastrioti” high school in context of the EU4Schools program funded by the EU.

The expedition group, which since 2004 has been working for the discovery of the amphitheater, is focused on the cleaning and deepening of the western part, while the work will continue in other galleries of the most important archaeological site in Durrës.

The archeological expedition aims to bring to light other evidence of the rich cultural heritage of Durrës from the substrata of the Amphitheater built in the 2nd century AD.

Over the years, archaeological expeditions have discovered important post-antique phases and important archaeological site structures./p.s./

TIRANA, October 13/ATA/ A rare ancient mosaic has been added to the city of Durrës.

While opening the foundations for the reconstruction of the “Gjergj Kastrioti” high school within the framework of the EU4Schools program financed by the EU and implemented by UNDP, a part of the mosaic came to light.

“Immediately the work began for the complete discovery of what in the future could be a new archaeological site of Durres”, wrote in the social media Mayor of Durres Emiriana Sako, who has closely followed the works together with Minister of Culture Elva Margariti, the well-known archaeologist prof. dr. Luan Perzhita, representative of UNDP and the National Institute of Cultural Heritage.

According to archaeologist prof. dr. Luan Perzhita, who leads the work for this archaeological discovery, this is a very rare mosaic not only for our country, but for the entire Balkan region.

This mosaic, composed of dark blue and white stones with geometric and floral figures, belongs to the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century and is part of a luxurious villa that was located near the amphitheater of Durrës.

So far, some parts of this mosaic have been discovered, which is thought to extend over an area of about 60 square meters. In addition to the mosaic, there was discovered a 3-meter-high part of the wall on the eastern side, as well as several other objects. The work on this mosaic was done at a very high professional level.

This is a very rare archaeological discovery that adds to the extraordinary cultural heritage of Durrës. The work of archaeologists will continue until the complete discovery of all archaeological objects in this area./p.s./

TIRANA, September 21 /ATA/ After 30 years, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Faculty of History-Philology have resumed the archaeological excavations in Belsh.

In context of “Heritage Days”, Minister of Culture Elva Margariti highlighted this fact through an online post saying that the impressive results of a thermal bath from the Roman period are coming to light.

This special discovery will be an added value for the Belsh area. People will get to know more on the history and the area will have a new archaeological settlement.

The discovered object is thought to be part of a rural complex of the “Villa Rustica” type, dated between c. III-IV AD. The restorers of the Institute are working on the conservation and restoration project of the monument, with the aim of restoring it into a place worth visiting.

Located only 3 km away from the city of Belsh, in the village of Rrasë, this settlement carries apart from the ruins of a Roman building from the second century also the presence of ancient bones. These bones prove that there was early life and civilization in this area. The term of the second century, is a resort and residence of the caravans of the time and so far in Albania things like these have been identified in Butrint and Dyrrah. /j.p/p.s./
