TIRANA, June 10 /ATA/ The Director General of the National Civil Protection Agency, Haki Çako, stated today that the Albanian government has paved the way for projects that provide municipalities across the country with resources to enhance their firefighting response capabilities.
At a meeting with 61 Fire Service directors, which was also attended by Interior Minister Ervin Hoxha and representatives from local government and civil emergency services, Çako highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting local authorities.
“For the year 2025, unlike previous years, the Albanian government has formally approved selected projects under the Civil Emergencies program, as outlined in Council of Ministers Decision No. 129 dated February 28, 2025. These projects provide for the allocation of equipment to municipalities aimed at strengthening their firefighting response capabilities,” stated Çako.
Çako emphasized that cooperation with local authorities and the State Police is crucial for effective natural disaster management, noting that 99% of wildfires are caused by human activity.
Çako stated that the important national risk assessment document, approved by the Council of Ministers, along with the national strategy for risk mitigation, identifies fires in forests, pastures, and fruit tree orchards as one of the natural disasters threatening the country. He emphasized the necessity for everyone to remain on high alert throughout the summer, as this period—especially amid the increase in tourism—represents the most critical challenge for the full engagement of the operational structures within Albania’s civil protection system.

The head of the National Civil Protection Agency (AKMC) confirmed that 2024 recorded the highest number of wildfires compared to all previous years. “In terms of the number of fires reported and the capacities mobilized at the national level, the responsibility and investment of the Albanian government in 2024—as well as in previous summer seasons—has been like no other, both in terms of human resources and financial capacities,” he stated.
Çako emphasized that early warning system is a key component in the effective management of natural disasters. He called for enhanced coordination among all involved entities, including operational teams, local governments, and the State Police.
