“The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) was observed yesterday on December 3, reminding us of the need to help those facing difficulties at a point of their life or lack the capacities to cope with their lives and earn their living. In the framework of its support and solidarity with all the people in need and social categories, the government has decided to increase the amount of financial coverage for the hygiene-sanitary package for paraplegic and quadriplegic people,” Health Minister Albania Koçiu said in a press statement after a regular cabinet meeting.

Health Minister underlined that there are a total of 18,000 personal caregivers for whom the Ministry of Health and Welfare is working to launch new professional figures. In addition to training, they will have to receive financial support, with salary and social and health insurance to support the personal caregivers of disabled people with a real profession.

Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, the Minister of Finance and Economy, Delina Ibrahimaj said that the amendment to the law binds all the private businesses to employ people with disabilities.

“All businesses with a high number of employees must hire persons with disabilities. We will soon announce the procedure on how to proceed with the declaration of employees, which will be active from January 2024. We will give time to the tax administration, as well as to the businesses for enforcement of this law. The legal provision is applied both for the public and private entities that should employ people with disabilities or pay contributions equal to the minimum wage for every disabled person they refuse to hire,” Ibrahimaj said.
