TIRANA, Dec 4 /ATA/ – Online violence against women and girls in Albania is escalating due to the effects of the digital world, the Minister of Health and Social Protection Albana Koçiu said in remarks at an event hosted by Albanian Parliament, entitled “Gender based violence in digital space,” as part of activities during the 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

According to Health Minister, nobody is immune to violence, with women unfortunately being more exposed to it.

“The findings of surveys suggest that around half of women and girls in Albania have been through at least an episode of physical, psychological or sexual violence during their lives. This is unacceptable, but unfortunately the digital world often escalates them. On the other hand, technology, with all its limitations, also has its advantages, as it is up to everyone how it is used,” Koçiu said.

According to her, online violence is a global challenge and it doesn’t affect Albania only.

Health Minister noted that over 4200 gender-based violence victims had benefited support in 2024, while a series of awareness programs have been launched in collaboration with the international partners.

She called for a strong wall of cooperation and solidarity among individuals and state institutions.
