TIRANA, Oct 20 /ATA/ – A Digital Identity system is essential for Albania’s transition from cash to digital transactions and will drive innovation across multiple sectors, Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Monday.

Speaking at the official launch event for the Digital Identity platform, Rama highlighted its role in boosting transparency, reducing informality, and improving services for citizens and businesses.

“We are committed to innovation and have become a regional leader in delivering public services through digital platforms,” Rama said. He called Digital Identity a “vital tool” for implementing the government’s plan to replace cash with digital payments.

“This means enhanced security for consumers, more transparency for businesses, and increased revenue from Value Added Tax – much of which is currently lost due to informality and under-the-table practices,” he added.

The government head also said the platform would enable broader use of artificial intelligence to improve services in areas such as healthcare, allowing citizens to access quality care regardless of location.

He pointed to ongoing work to digitize the transportation sector and the creation of a powerful AI-supported accelerator to assist government ministries.

“We are building a strong accelerator to support our AI-created minister and provide every sector with digital tools and options to overcome long-standing obstacles or make bigger leaps forward,” Rama said.
