TIRANA, Sept 25 /ATA/- By Maela Marini/Prime Minister Edi Rama announced in a conversation with representatives of 100 associations of American Albanians in New York that “Albania already has a law guaranteeing the vote of diaspora”.

Rama said that this is a fact already materialized in the law of the Albanian Parliament, after many years of efforts.

“But in the case of the election law, a larger majority is needed than the majority we have had available and thanks to a more organized and sensitive positive pressure from the diaspora representatives themselves, we now have this law in place,” Rama said.

The Prime Minister said that “all Albanians who are abroad and who want to participate in the electoral process have the right and the opportunity to vote through a simple system.”.

“It’s a system like here in America, where to vote you have to register and then, the moment you register, in the case of this system that we have, you get the envelope, you have the ballot paper in there, you put the ballot in the box you want, expression of your will, you close the envelope and you mail it back,” he said.

TIRANA, Dec 26 /ATA/ The Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, appealed on Tuesday that the request sent on December 11 to the Assembly by 7 proposing deputies for the passage of the law that enables immigrants to vote, should be included in the parliamentary mechanisms.
Tabaku said that politics is not what you say, but above all what you do!

“For years on end, politics has masterfully made the case for the need and the possibility of voting for all Albanians, implying the vote of the Diaspora. A constitutional right that has unfortunately been denied for 3 decades in a row and especially in the last decade when their request was better articulated. This demand and constitutional right has met with the empty rhetoric of the majority that has voted for every law in parliament in these 10 years. Those who, when it comes to turning the immigrants’ request into a law, have remained silent, carrying on with the rhetoric of a theoretical exercise using the verb “must,” Tabaku wrote in a post on social media.

Unfortunately, Tabaku added, “the parliament that has passed any tailor-made law in these ten years and the deputies who have often turned into puppets signing blank papers for laws they have not even been asked before have not produced any reform worthy of the vote of the Diaspora. A parliament that has produced few reforms, few laws and almost no change in the lives of citizens. A parliament that scrambled for a small agreement between some parties instead of big agreement to give the missing right to the majority of Albanians. But all this cannot continue indefinitely, and we must at least find a mechanism to include the Diaspora’s vote in parliamentary discussions.”
