The news was announced on Sunday in a post on social media by the MP of the Democratic Party, Jorida Tabaku, adding that “although the electoral reform commission is proceeding with its meetings, it has not come up with any real output.”

While bringing to attention the figures of those who left the country in the last 3 decades, Tabaku said that “the challenge of emigration is not addressed by means of empty words or promises, but needs a clear governing vision.”

“Our compatriots who have left Albania have the right to choose the vision they want to run our country. In a nutshell, our duty as policymakers is to restore to them the right to vote that has been denied by the electoral mechanisms and calculations. Bearing in mind the constitutional right to choose their representatives in the Assembly of Albania, together with a group of colleagues I submitted to the Parliament a legal initiative “For the Vote of the Diaspora” which is actually the proposal of a part of the diaspora that have established a very efficient platform composed of active intellectuals in the life of our country”, she said.

Tabaku emphasized that “we have all been patiently waiting for the election reform commission to consider this proposal in these 4 years.”
However, the result was not as positive as expected. Yet again, as long as there is life, there is hope! As a result, in a hurry, as the time is ticking, my appeal goes to my colleagues in the Assembly to put aside the show and deal with that proposal that sits in the cold drawers of the Assembly. Let’s take it and discuss it to the benefit of representation in the parliament. Time is running out! Our task is not to satisfy the whims of the politics, but to ensure the constitutional rights of our fellow patriots”, she said.
The vote of the diaspora, according to Tabaku, “is not only a matter of trust in politics, but a right that should be granted to them.”
