TIRANA, Feb 24 /ATA/ The diagnosis of cardiac anomalies in neonates, beginning in the intrauterine phase (within the womb), is now recognized as one of the most significant achievements in modern medicine.

In a social media post, Prime Minister Edi Rama highlighted that, “thanks to advancements in prenatal diagnostics, particularly through the use of fetal echocardiography, heart anomalies can now be identified at an early stage, allowing both medical professionals and parents the crucial time needed to plan appropriate treatment from the moment of birth.”

“Today, we are achieving significantly better results in this area, owing to the expertise of our healthcare professionals and state-of-the art medical equipment, which guarantee more accurate diagnoses, timely procedures, and greater safety for the lives of every child,” emphasized Prime Minister Rama.

In a video published by Rama, Prof. Dr. Eliona Demaliaj stated, “Congenital heart defects in newborns are unfortunately encountered all too frequently. Early diagnosis during the intrauterine phase is a critical step in saving lives. The collaboration between obstetricians, sonographers, and pediatric cardiac surgeons is yielding results that are increasingly successful, and these outcomes continue to improve.”

Dr. Ajmone Troshani, pediatrician, stated that “with early clinical examination, early suspicion, and timely referral for echocardiography, it is possible to prevent serious congenital complications.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Evis Binaj, obstetrician and gynecologist, indicated that “congenital heart defects are encountered in around 1% of newborns.
