TIRANA, Nov  14 /ATA/ Minister of Health and Social Protection, Ogerta Manastirliu, stated on World Diabetes Day that as part of the 2023 budget, diabetes test strips will be provided free of charge for senior citizens over 65 years of age.

Manastirliu emphasized that “by giving free test strips to the elderly over 65 years old, we will save grandmothers and grandfathers at least 1 monthly pension per year.”

This decision comes after the reimbursement of diabetes test strips for children and young people up to 25 years old.

The procedure for reimbursement of diabetes test strips begins with the GP, where the patient withdraws the form and then presents himself at the reimbursement pharmacies, which are located in every regional hospital and at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital in Tirana.

November 14 is otherwise known as the World Diabetes Day.

On November 14, the World Diabetes Day, all medical communities and diabetes associations join forces in a powerful voice to prevent diabetes. November 14 has been designated as the World Diabetes Day in honor of the birthday of Frederic Banting, who together with Charles Best, both Canadian scientists, successfully managed to isolate the hormone insulin, one of the most important breakthroughs which changed and saved the lives of diabetics around the world .
