TIRANA, April 3 /ATA/ – The Commissioner for the Right to Information and Personal Data Protection Besnik Dervishi, told an interview on Wednesday that an exemplary public consultation process has taken place concerning the right to information law in the country.

Asked about the situation of the right to information in Albania during an interview with the Albanian section of the Voice of America, Dervishi said that “situation is complex because a number of factors.”

“The right to information law has been improved after the amendments to it last year. I think that an exemplary public consultation process took place with involvement of the interest groups, the investigative media and the civil society organizations and their suggestions were reflected in the changes to the law on the right to information. It is one of the best legislations in the world,” the Commissioner said.

Dervishi also noted that a strong legislation on the personal data protection is needed in the face of the new technology risks.

“The country needs a strong legislation and we are progressing in this respect. We have adopted the relevant Council of Europe convention and are in the process of transposing the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),” the Commissioner said, adding that investment in human resources and continued training programs and proper security measures are needed.
