TIRANA, June 23 /ATA/ Chairman Sali Berisha stated today that the Democratic Party backs the protesters, including their call for a non-political transitional government should the prime minister step down. He added that the movement’s five key demands will become part of the opposition’s political agenda moving forward.

He highlighted the fact that the opposition takes these demands “with the greatest seriousness” in all political activities, noting that the DP has raised the protesters’ cause in their meetings abroad.

“We fully support the first five demands. This support fuels our total commitment, which stems from our civic fiber and our duty as Democrats, rather than just from party symbols and slogans.”

The demands presented yesterday guarantee that the protesters’ concerns will be taken with the utmost seriousness in both our domestic and international activities, said Berisha.

“We have consistently championed the rightful cause of the protesters on the global stage. Furthermore, we insist that the Assembly halt all other business to immediately address the legitimate demands of Albanian citizens and the youth.” /m.q/r.e/a.f/p.s./

PRISHTINA, June 3 /ATA/ – The U.S. Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer has spoken with the Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic to discuss latest tensions in northern Kosovo.

Since May 29, local Serbs have been regularly protesting to prevent the new Albanian mayors from entering their municipal offices in the three northern municipalities of Zveçan, Leposaviq and Zubin Potok.

On May 29, the protest escalated into violence and clashes between the troops from NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, and Serbian protesters.

Kosovo PM Kurti has most recently urged newly-elected mayors to carry out their duties from alternative locations and has ordered police to withdraw from the municipal buildings.

The U.S. Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer said in a press statement that he has welcomed Prime Minister Kurti’s willingness to work towards conditions for new elections.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, and Prime Minister Kurti have signalled that they are ready to work towards holding new elections in the Serb-dominated municipalities.

The U.S. official has also called on Serbian President Vucic to withdraw armed forces stationed near the border and to lower their state of readiness, as well as to urge protesters to remain peaceful in northern Kosovo.

In two White House press statements, Finer told Kurti and Vucic that the United States expects both sides to re-engage in the EU-facilitated Dialogue and to fully implement the normalization agreement reached in Brussels and Ohrid earlier this year.
