TIRANA, Jan 20 /ATA/- By Arbi Fortuzi/ State Minister for Relations with Parliament, Toni Gogu, announced today that one of the legal initiatives to be discussed in Parliament, as part of the reform process for EU integration, is the media law.
Minister Gogu stated that the proposed changes include decriminalizing defamation for journalists, thereby strengthening and safeguarding their role in society, as well as ensuring transparency in the ownership of television platforms.

He made this announcement during a media conference at the Prime Minister’s Office, which focused on “the new phase of negotiations with the European Union and the political commitment to succeed.”

The conference was also attended by Majlinda Dhuka, State Minister and Chief Negotiator, and Adea Pirdeni, State Minister for Public Administration and Anti-Corruption.
Gogu pointed out that “a key aspect of the legislative initiatives is focused on the media and its role in society. The law aimed at improving audiovisual media with the main focus on transparency of television platforms, ensuring that the public has the right to know about ownership and the stakeholders behind the media. Last year, we made significant strides in combating disinformation.”

He further stated that “another crucial element concerns the protection of journalists in their essential role for democracy. The decriminalisation of defamation will ensure that journalists are not burdened by defamation charges when acting in good faith and endeavouring to report on current developments. This represents one of the cornerstone provisions of the legal package, which will subsequently be translated into the European Union standards in everyday life.”

Another legislative package concerns the protection of the family.

“Albanian families are facing the monster of violence, which is why legal amendments have been proposed to strengthen the protection of families from violence, particularly women and the most vulnerable, as minors are also affected by violence. Therefore, we are enhancing the coordinating mechanism and the response mechanism,” said Gogu.

“Other amendments focus on combating corruption and crime, particularly through proposed changes to the Penal Code. Several draft laws are also included in the package to strengthen the fight against drugs. Additionally, there will be revisions to the law regarding the role of investigative committees, among other things,” stated Gogu.
