TIRANA, Jan 19 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha on Monday called for the resignation of the government, accusing it of “disfiguring Albania and the Albanian people,” and urged citizens to join a nationwide opposition protest on January 24.

Speaking at the party’s rally in front of the Prime Minister’s office, Berisha described the upcoming protest as a “decisive moment for the country’s political future” and one of the strongest demonstrations Tirana has ever seen.

He said the January 24 rally would mark the peak of public anger and called it the most important protest so far.

“Albanians are eagerly awaiting a peaceful revolt, a stand-to-stand confrontation with this regime, and the victory of the opposition,” Berisha said. “Each of us, every opposition supporter, must do everything in our power to be present in Albania on January 24.”

The main opposition DP leader also referenced a recent document approved by a U.S. congressional external committee, which reflects citizens’ grievances raised during December protests.

He said the document condemned political arrests under the current government and calls for intervention by Washington and Brussels.

“Albania will never have a constitution or the rule of law without the triumph of the opposition and the peaceful uprising of its citizens,” Berisha added.
