The data show that Albania’s central arts institutions staged 1,272 performances and premieres during the year, attracting a total audience of 171,607.

Albania also strengthened its profile as a regional and international cultural destination. A total of 314 cultural events featuring international participation were held in 2025, drawing 261,654 attendees. Kosovo, European Union member states and Saudi Arabia accounted for the highest numbers of events and participants, according to the statistics.

The presence of foreign artists in Albania’s cultural life also expanded. They were followed by artists from Kosovo with 11.7% and Italy with 9.8%.

One of the year’s most notable trends was growing public interest in cultural heritage. The number of visitors to museums, archaeological parks and other cultural heritage institutions rose to 1,523,587, up 15.9% from 2024.

The cultural sector continued to contribute to employment, with 33,893 people working in culture-related activities and professions in 2025, equivalent to 3% of total employment nationwide, INSTAT said.

TIRANA, June 16 /ATA/ – More than 424,000 people visited Albania’s cultural heritage institutions and sites during the first five months of 2026, underscoring the sector’s growing appeal among domestic and international tourists, Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja said on Tuesday.

Gonxhja described culture as one of Albania’s standout success stories, citing sustained growth in visitor numbers and revenues generated by the country’s heritage attractions.

Between January and May, cultural heritage institutions and centres welcomed 424,082 visitors, including both Albanian and foreign tourists. National museums received 143,086 visitors, while archaeological parks attracted 188,437 and castles and cultural monuments recorded 91,559 visitors.

Visitor numbers rose by 95.7% compared with the same period in 2023, while revenues generated by heritage sites increased by 147.4%, according to official figures.

Compared with the corresponding period a year earlier, visitor numbers were up 9.9% and revenues increased by 7.3%.

“Our heritage is more than history; it is a source of energy and national pride, and a magnet drawing an ever-increasing number of visitors from Albania and around the world,” Gonxhja said.

The figures highlight the growing role of cultural tourism in Albania’s visitor economy as authorities continue efforts to promote and preserve the country’s historical and archaeological assets.

TIRANA, Feb 3 /ATA/ – Albania’s cultural sites, museums and castles attracted about 1.5 million visitors last year, a 16% increase compared with 2024, Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a news conference, Gonxhja said the rise reflected the opening of new cultural attractions and the revitalisation of existing sites across the country.

He cited newly opened or upgraded institutions including the National Gallery of Arts, the National Children’s Culture Centre, several theatres and cinemas, museums in Elbasan and Durres, visitor centres at Apollonia, and restored castles such as Borsh and Kanina in southern Albania.

The Minister said major projects currently under way include the National Theatre, the Jewish Museum in Vlora and restoration works at Shkodra Castle, while a range of additional museums, visitor centres, libraries and heritage sites are at various stages of development nationwide.

Gonxhja also outlined plans for archaeological excavations and restoration projects at religious and historical monuments, including sites in Gjirokastra, Berat, Lezha, Durres and Vlora.

He said funding for art, culture and heritage institutions would be doubled to support programming, partnerships, maintenance and conservation.

Gonxhja added that the government would step up efforts to strengthen copyright protection in the digital environment in line with European Union standards, including fair online remuneration, modernised licensing mechanisms and tougher action against piracy.

TIRANA, Jan 3 /ATA/ – Albania’s cultural heritage saw a record-breaking growth in 2024, with over 1.3 million visitors to its heritage sites across the country, recording a 30% increase from 2023.

Prime Minister Edi Rama took to the social media on Friday to share an outline of the main cultural developments in 2024, including a wide range of over 2300 cultural events, from art exhibitions to local festivals, marking a 25% year-on-year increase.

The International Culture Weeks was one of the year’s major features, with some 21 countries around the world showcasing their cultural heritage with over 250 events, featuring at least 360 artists.

Albania was also represented at the Venice International Art Biennale, where Iva Lulashi’s “Love as a Glass of Water” was showcased.

In addition to cultural events, last year also saw a series of significant investments in Albania’s cultural infrastructure.

Several important heritage sites were reopened under the EU-funded EU4Culture programme, including the restored Puppet Theatre, the Ethnographic Museum of Krujë, and the Ethnographic Museum of Kavajë. These projects are part of Albania’s broader efforts to preserve its cultural assets and boost tourism.

The National Museum of Fine Arts and the National Centre for Children’s Culture also saw upgrades.

Additionally, the Art in Public Spaces initiative continued, with notable works like “Terminal for Tirana” and “The Albanian Key” being installed in public spaces, making art more accessible to the wider public.

The year concluded with the inclusion of K’cimi, the traditional dance from Tropoja, in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition highlights Albania’s efforts to preserve its unique cultural traditions for future generations.
