The agreement was signed in Rome by the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, and the Foreign Minister of Italy, Antonio Tajani.

MEFA announced on Tuesday when and how this agreement comes into force.
After signing the agreement, it is ratified by both contracting states.
There are about 550,000 Albanian citizens and about 20,000 Italian citizens who, once the agreement takes effect, will be entitled to aggregation of the contribution periods.

The scope of this agreement are the benefits from the mandatory Albanian social security scheme, such as old-age pension, disability pension and family pension, insurance for sickness and maternity benefits and unemployment insurance.
Similar agreements have so far been signed with Austria, North Macedonia, Belgium, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Romania, Germany, Turkey, Hungary, Switzerland, Canada, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Croatia, Luxembourg and Italy.
Also, 17 agreements on Social Protection are in the process of negotiation with the countries of Greece, Moldova, Denmark, Slovenia, Netherlands, Australia, USA, France, Poland, Sweden, Serbia, Norway, Spain, Iceland, United Kingdom, Finland, UAE.
