Speaking to reporters, Alibeaj said that the lawmakers at the DP parliamentary group meeting drew to the conclusion that the ruling Socialist majority lacked the legitimacy to decide about the country’s next president.

According to him, “it is for this reason that the opposition should definitely take part in the process of electing Albania’s next head of state, as the opposition represents at least half of the Albanian population.”

“I would like to make some clarification about the draft. It is a draft that synthesizes the suggestions forwarded by each DP lawmaker. This majority has no legitimacy to decide about the President of the Republic. There are three ‘non grata’ Socialist MPs, two lawmakers behind bars, according to the Department of State report. We should participate in this process to represent at least half of the Albanian population. The participating DP lawmakers presented a non-negotiable precondition, demanding that the country’s next president be an anti-communist,” Alibeaj said.
