TIRANA, Jan 19 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party lawmaker Jorida Tabaku said Thursday that she has forwarded to Parliament two amendments to the laws on concessions and private and public partnership and the law on the strategic investments in a bid to fight graft, saying that combating corruption is primarily a political will.

The opposition MP Tabaku underlined that the four principles of the amendments to concession contracts aim at boosting transparency, increasing personal responsibility, financial reporting and auditing and banning offshore companies from participating in tenders.

Tabaku stated that “any public office holder not only should be held personally accountable for his or her own actions, but should also be assumed responsible for actions or failure to act.”

According to the amendments proposed by Tabaku, any company seeking to win a public concession contract should prove it owns at least 50% of the amount of money a project is worth of and source of his income should be a legal one.

“In 2019, Albania was included in the grey list of countries under increased monitoring for money laundering activities. Our amendments will oblige every commercial subject to submit a detailed report on the income and their source of income anytime they are issued construction permit. Companies owned by offshore entities should be banned from participating in tenders,” Tabaku said.

According to her, the fight against corruption should become a national priority.
