TIRANA, Aug 20 /ATA/ After a five-day relentless effort, the firefighting mission in Albania has been successfully completed.

The two Romanian military aircraft of the type C-27J Spartan and C-130 Hercules, which were deployed in this mission under the European Civil Protection Mechanism, have made an extraordinary contribution to the suppression of wildfires that had engulfed some of the most at risk areas of our country.

In the course of these days Romanian aircraft have conducted dozens of flights over some of the hotspots, helping to contain and douse flames in national parks, inhabited areas, as well as in the most difficult and inaccessible terrain.

Their efforts have been crucial in preventing further damage. Throughout the mission in Albania, Romanian aircraft carried a total of 141,000 litres of water to douse flames in the areas of: Lake Prespa, Mount Tomori, in the village of Nenshetaj, in Orosh of the municipality of Mirdita, in Fushë-Bulqiza and in the village of Arra, the municipality of Kukes.

The Minister of Defence, Pirro Vengu, expressed deep gratitude to the Romanian staff engaged in this tough operation, appreciating their professionalism and dedication throughout the mission.

Minister Vengu also thanked the European Civil Protection Mechanism for its support and close cooperation in coordinating these efforts.

“This mission was a great example of European solidarity and international cooperation at critical moments. The assistance provided by Romania and the European Civil Protection Mechanism has been invaluable for managing the emergency situation in our country,” said Minister Vengu.

Thankful to the National Civil Protection Agency, which played a key role in coordinating and supporting the field operation, coordinating international and domestic efforts in an efficient way.

The Romanian Ambassador to Albania, Oktavian Serban, present at this event, thanked the European Union for the decision to intervene, as well as the Albanian troops for their work in battling fires and very good cooperation.
