TIRANA, Oct 7 /ATA/ The police announced on Tuesday that they have shed light on the circumstances surrounding the murder of Appellate Court judge Astrit Kalaja, which occurred inside the courtroom yesterday.

In connection with the serious incident, the police have arrested the perpetrator, E.SH, as well as G.Sh, the perpetrator’s uncle, and B.K., a security officer at the Tirana Appellate Court.

The police stated that “on 06.10.2025, at approximately 15:38, the operations room of the Tirana Local Police Directorate received a report that Judge A. K. was shot inside the Tirana Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction while conducting a hearing on the case ‘Objection to Enforcement Actions.’

The plaintiffs were R. K., accompanied by his son E. K., the defendant was court enforcement officer T. M. from the Shkodër Enforcement Office, and a third party involved was G. Sh., accompanied by his nephew E. Sh.”

After receiving the report, the police announced that they arrived at the scene, taking measures to detain the perpetrator as well as all individuals suspected or believed to have information about the incident.

At the same time, the police stated that the investigative team, composed of Judicial Police officers and forensic experts under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office, continued investigative actions, including examining the crime scene, reviewing and analyzing video footage, and taking witness statements, enabling a full reconstruction and documentation of the incident.

“At 13:42, in the public waiting area of the court, individuals E. Sh. and G. Sh. entered and passed through the scanner (detector) one after the other. The detector signaled the presence of metal, triggering the red lights, but B. K., a security officer at the Tirana Appellate Court, remained seated and did not take any action to conduct a physical check of these individuals or record them in the protocol book, where all persons entering and exiting the court premises should be documented,” the police reported.

The police further stated that E. Sh. and G. Sh. remained in the court’s public waiting area until approximately 15:29, after which they entered courtroom no. 3, where the hearing was taking place. At 15:35, as the parties stood up, immediately following Judge A. K.’s announcement of the verdict, E. Sh., present in the courtroom, drew a pistol from his belt and fired multiple shots at Judge A. K., who, despite receiving first aid, succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.

According to the police, immediately following this act, E. Sh. aimed the pistol and fired once at R. K. and E. K., injuring both, who are currently hospitalized but out of life-threatening danger.

The police also reported that investigations indicate G. Sh. took no action to stop his nephew’s criminal acts, raising reasonable suspicion that he was aware of the plan to assassinate the judge, acting as an instigator and/or accomplice.

“After the incident, E. Sh. left the courtroom and handed the weapon to B. P., a court officer responsible for overseeing and ensuring the proper conduct of court proceedings, in another room. E. Sh. was then taken under control and immediately arrested by police officers upon exiting the courtyard,” the police reported.

At the conclusion of all procedural actions, the following individuals were arrested in flagrante for the related criminal offenses:

E. Sh., 30, is suspected of the criminal offenses of “Murder of Public Officials” committed in collaboration, **“Murder under Aggravating Circumstances Against Two or More Persons”** attempted and committed in collaboration, and **“Unlawful Possession and Manufacture of Firearms, Explosives, and Ammunition.”**

G. Sh., 56, is suspected of the criminal offenses of “Murder of Public Officials” committed in complicity, and “Murder under Aggravating Circumstances Against Two or More Persons” attempted and committed in complicity.

B. K., 63, is under investigation for the criminal offense of “Abuse of Office.”

As evidentiary material, a firearm (pistol) containing three cartridges, used by the principal suspect, along with other items collected during the on-site inspection, were seized to support the formal documentation of the incident.

All collected evidence has been submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office for further legal proceedings.
