TIRANA, Sept 9 /ATA/ The Saint Theodore Church in Kadipashaj, Lushnjë, is a cherished local monument currently undergoing restoration.

The church is undergoing a meticulous and professional restoration, aimed at reinforcing its structure, restoring its architectural features, and installing a drainage system to prevent future deterioration.

Under the supervision of experts from the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, this process aims not only to preserve the historical and spiritual values of the church but also to revitalize it as a vibrant space of the community’s cultural identity.

Dating back to around the year 1300, it stands as one of the oldest churches in the Myzeqe region. It is thought that a monastery initially existed on the site, with the church constructed sometime afterward.

The Church of Saint Theodore still preserves frescoes of historical value. It has been declared a Category I Cultural Monument and belongs to the post-Byzantine period, built in the basilica style and painted by the Çetiri brothers.

The restoration of the mural paintings, the iconostasis, and the intricately decorated wooden ceiling in the naos is also of great importance, as the ceiling is particularly unique in its kind.

The Church of Saint Theodore is believed to be the second oldest in the region after the Monastery of Ardenica. Unlike many other churches in Myzeqe, its architectural elements—the naos, narthex, and portico—are clearly distinct from one another. The naos follows a basilica plan, with interior dimensions of 14 by 8.40 meters, and is divided into three aisles by two rows of wooden columns. It features a wooden ceiling, which includes a central recessed section that imitates a central dome.
