TIRANA, March 24/ATA/- During his official visit to Great Britain, Prime Minister Edi Rama held a conversation at the auditorium of the Royal Institute of International Relations, the Chatham House.

Asked about Albania’s EU membership, Rama said that it is impossible to predict the future.

According to him, “Even the EU does not know anything about this, no one knows”.

“The simple and hardest part for us is that we have to do our homework. This is simple, but we must fulfill these tasks, not because we have to please Berlin or Paris, but because these tasks are essential to make Albania a modern and functional democracy with institutions that work for the people, for the national interest and Albania on the international stage”, emphasized the head of the government.

He underlined that there are about 4,000 draft laws that must be approved

“Would you make Albania a member country? Who knows what the EU will do in the future. We have seen an EU that has been hypocritical with us; we had done our homework, but it was not enough, because they had their own problems. The EU is a federation of egos that sometimes are not in harmony with each other. There are 27 choices for everything and they are not on the same day. It doesn’t matter if you do your homework, it doesn’t matter if the European Commission is present precisely to assess technically and not politically, objectively and not subjectively, how well this country has done its work. In other words, this country has done its job and deserves to open negotiations for membership”, emphasized Rama.

The prime minister underlined that, “The war in Ukraine brought to its senses the EU itself in terms of geopolitics. Now, they are more vigilant and understand that they cannot leave the Balkans out”.

“What we are praying for is that the EU continues to exist until we do our homework and then they disintegrate; it’s their problem. We want to be a state that is a functional and modern democracy for future generations and you can’t do that without the EU,” said Rama./p.s./
