TIRANA, June 15 /ATA/ – Albanian police have launched criminal proceedings against 19 people accused of organizing and participating in the blockage of the main road leading to Tirana International Airport, while efforts continue to identify others involved.

Police said on Monday the investigation followed a protest held on June 14 that was initially notified to authorities as a gathering in central Tirana, beginning at Skanderbeg Square and later moving in front of the Prime Minister’s office.

According to investigators, protest organizers and leaders called on participants to continue toward Tirana International Airport in Rinas, blocking traffic and disrupting the movement of vehicles and citizens along the route.

The 19 suspects are being investigated while not in custody on charges including obstruction of transport, organizing and participating in unlawful gatherings, and disturbing public order, police said.

Authorities also seized two vehicles as part of the investigation.

TIRANA, June 1 /ATA/ – Prosecutor’s office in Tirana has charged 13 individuals, including 10 environmental officials and business executives, for alleged involvement in a toxic waste licensing scheme that relied on falsified documents and fake inspections.

The individuals face abuse of office charges, violation of environmental protection and hazardous waste treatment regulations.

Prosecutors said that the 10 inspectors and public environment officials collaborated with private companies to approve hazardous waste operations that lacked proper sterilization equipment and failed to meet environmental standards.

The investigation was launched after a report by an investigative journalist and it uncovered forged documentation and paper-only inspections that allowed firms to secure public contracts without having the required facilities.

The investigation established that one company reportedly obtained over 30 state tenders between 2017 and 2022 using fraudulent claims.

TIRANA, May 22 /ATA/ – Special Anti-Corruption and Anti-Crime Prosecution Structure (SPAK) announced Thursday that anti-corruption prosecutors had seized two properties allegedly linked to Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj and his wife, Ajola Xoxa, as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected undeclared assets and financial misconduct.

SPAK said that investigation has shown that there is concrete evidence that lead to reasonable suspicion that Erion Veliaj, who is in pretrial detention in Durres since February 10, 2025, has committed another criminal offense.

The special anti-corruption body said in a press statement that there is reasonable suspicion that the couple failed to declare assets and may have concealed ownership of two properties adjacent to their residence in the upscale Kodra e Diellit area in the Albanian capital.

“Concrete evidence and data collected up to this stage of the preliminary investigation, there is evidence-based reasonable suspicion that the citizens E.V. and A.X. have factual property interests in two properties (one of which is additional property), which are neighboring the apartment located in Selitë, (Kodra e Diellit residence), where these citizens currently live,” SPAK stated in its release.

The investigation, launched in 2024, covers a wide range of potential offenses including high-level corruption, money laundering, false asset declarations, and obstruction of justice

First Instance Special Anti-Corruption and Anti-Crime Court has decided to put the two immovable properties under preventive sequestration.

TIRANA, February 11/ATA/ Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj considered a criminal perversion the charges of corruption and money laundering raised against him.

According to Veliaj, “The story that describes me as a corrupt criminal, who has hidden wealth and made money laundering together with his wife, is fabricated by a perverted individual, the prosecutor of our case”.

“For example, the prosecutor claims that my wife has spent over half a million euros on online purchases of dresses and jewelry. But, the prosecutor did not want to hear about my and my wife’s explanations. As a matter of fact, the online purchases are all declared and in a several times smaller amount. These purchases were made for the artistic performances of my wife’s cultural foundation. Hence, claiming that money was poured into luxury, is a criminal perversion”, wrote Veliaj in his reaction.

Further on, Veliaj emphasized that during control in the house, the prosecutor did not find either dresses worth thousands of euros or jewelry of any particular value. /a.f/p.s./

PRISHTINA, Dec 6 /ATA/ – The Hague-based Kosovo Specialist Prosecutor’s Office on Friday brought new charges against former President Hashim Thaçi, accusing him of obstructing justice.

The charges include interfering with court proceedings and disobeying judicial orders. The Specialist Prosecutor’s Office has also announced that three other individuals, Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj, and Fadil Fazliu, were arrested a day on related charges and the three are now in custody at the detention center in The Hague.

Meanwhile, former Justice Minister Hajredin Kuçi has been summoned to appear before the Specialist Chambers next Monday to face two charges of disobeying the court.

Thaçi has been in custody since 2020, awaiting trial for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during Kosovo’s conflict in the late 1990s. The new indictment lists three counts of obstructing officials, three counts of leaking confidential information, and four counts of disobeying court orders.

According to prosecutors, Thaçi shared confidential information with Smakaj, Kilaj, Fazliu, and Kuçi between April and November 2023. He allegedly instructed them to influence witness testimonies and coordinated efforts to interfere with the judicial process.

The indictment claims Thaçi organized three separate groups with the aim of obstructing justice.

The complex was privatized when Berisha served as the country’s Prime Minister.

SPAK said prosecutors continued investigations as part of the criminal proceedings registered for the criminal offenses of “Passive corruption of senior state officials or local elected officials,” “active corruption of senior officials or local elected officials” and “laundering the proceeds of the crime” conducted in cooperation, stipulated by the Criminal Code.

As part of its investigation, SPAK stated that states that reasonable suspicions have been raised, supported by evidence, that Sali Berisha has committed the criminal offense of “passive corruption of high state officials or local elected officials”, committed in cooperation with citizen Jarmarbër Malltezi.

“The citizen Sali Berisha, in his capacity as Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania, has committed concrete and active actions to adopt legislation and by-laws aimed at adapting them according to the needs of the five known property owner families, with direct winner, among others, being the husband of his daughter, citizen Jamarbër Malltezi,” SPAK said in a press release.

SPAK said that Berisha exploited position as Prime Minister to privatize state-owned land in Tirana and return it to its previous owners, who immediately sold it at a low price to Malltezi, who built apartments on the land.

SPAK said that Special Anti-Corruption and Anti-Crime Court ruled that ex-PM Berisha is banned from leaving the country and under an order that obliges him to report his presence in the judicial police.
