Some young people broke through the police cordon and struck the door of the Prime Minister’s Office with the chairs.

After gathering on the “Martyrs of the Nation” boulevard—where they were joined by students—the protesters headed toward the Ministry of Education.

The lecturers’ boycott continues today; Aleksandër Kovaçi, head of the University Employees’ Union, stated to the media that the Union’s leadership voted unanimously yesterday to declare a boycott across all universities in the country, in solidarity with the students.

Explaining the reasons behind the Union’s decision, Kovaçi stated that, “Students are protesting for education, healthcare, accountability and more.”

Also, the Union is calling on Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign and for the formation of a caretaker government to ensure institutional stability and respect for the will of the citizens. /k.s/j.p/p.s./

Gonzato affirmed independence of the justice institutions.

“I don’t think they were against the commission. They considered that their contribution to the commission should be treated differently. I think that the media did not convey fairly the stance of the representatives of the High Council of Prosecution, the Judiciary and SPAK”, he said in a statement to the media from Elbasan.

Gonzato emphasized that, “It is crystal clear that we should respect the independence of justice institutions. This means that their contribution will be required, but the Justice Reform of 2016 will have to be consolidated”.

“This led us to help with our expertise for the commission in order to accelerate all the efforts related to the prevention of corruption, good governance and the consolidation of the Justice Reform”, he said.

Regarding the opposition’s violent protests, Gonzato said that, “The opposition has different ways available to denounce the lack of democracy and I don’t think that burning chairs is the best way.”

“We are in the process of opening the first chapter of EU integration negotiations. This means that it is very important in this context that the Parliament of Albania functions as it should and the ruling majority and the opposition play their respective roles,” he said. /p.s./

“The more violence from them, the more votes in the upcoming elections for us, because no one votes for the party of violence and instability, neither in Albania nor in the Diaspora. Albania has suffered a lot to gain the right to free speech and the Parliament elected by free vote, and in respect of them, there cannot be tolerated violence and barbarism towards democratic institutions “, said Balla.
