TIRANA, May 5/ATA/ Spile Cave in Himara, a standout feature of the Albanian coast, has been revitalized to enhance its year-round tourism appeal.

According to Homer’s Odyssey, this is the legendary cave where Odysseus met the Cyclops, Polyphemus. Known simply as the Cave of the Cyclops, it marks the spot of their fateful encounter 2,700 years ago.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja visited this cave which carries an important cultural and tourist potential for the area.

Following a meticulous intervention, the cave is now protected and interpreted, offering a unique visitor experience that preserves its natural and historical integrity. Enhanced lighting highlights the cave’s distinctive features at night, transforming it into a Riviera landmark, while the revitalized, welcoming space at the entrance completes the experience.

This project links Himara’s natural wonders—including beaches and mountains—with its historic heritage, designing a complete, authentic tourist route.

This project—jointly managed by the Albanian Development Fund and the National Institute of Cultural Heritage with funding from the World Bank—was designed by CHwB Albania and is monitored by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage Vlora.

TIRANA, March 15/ATA/ The Lepenica written cave has received the status of preliminary protection, a step towards declaring it a first category Cultural Monument.

Vlora Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage gave the news emphasizing that this decision came after the proposal of this directorate, the Directorate of Archaeological Service and the Institute of Archaeology of Tirana, the National Council of Material Cultural Heritage.

The painting of the “Lepenica Written Cave” is a rare evidence of prehistoric rock art, the only one identified so far in Southwestern Albania.

The proposal was made based on the work carried out by archaeologist Prof. Dr. Muzafer Korkuti, for the documentation and study of the painting in 1984, as well as on the basis of the work for its re-documentation, carried out by the Albanian-Spanish project “Lepenica” in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage Vlora, the Institute of Archaeology and the Escola Superior de Conservación e Restauración de BBCC de Galicia, Spain.

According to Academician Muzafer Korkuti, the rock painting of the Written Cave in Lepenica is an original work with its own conceptual basis and represents a certain stage of prehistoric art, where the abstract image of time is presented in a monumental way.

The painting is a rare creation of Neolithic art, which with its ideograms and with its own means and method, has conveyed a “message” of the inhabitants of the time. /p.s./

TIRANA, August 21/ATA/ The northern city of Puka has become a tourist attraction for local and foreign visitors while it is considered a beautiful tourist adventure in every season.

The most visited spots in the territory of Puka municipality are the caves. So far, there have been recorded more than 50 caves.

Some of them are located near the residential areas. Since ancient times, they have been used as shelters or safe places.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared today in the social media the rare footage from one of them, the Fairies’ cave in Gojan of Puka.

Unique in its kind in Albania, the prime minister wrote that, “Until the 1960s, it also served as a place of pilgrimage”.

The cave of Fairies is a small, but very beautiful and special cave, the only one of its kind in Albania. The spring of water flowing above it covers the cave from all sides down to the stream creating incredible formations and an incredibly panoramic view of the entire surrounding area.

Until the 1960s, this cave also served as a place of pilgrimage and its name cave of Fairies shows this, meaning the place where there are the fairies.

The cave is known by the local inhabitants of this area as a holy place, but it has also curative values. /m.m/a.f/p.s./

The Administration of Protected Areas in Elbasan published today a view of the Kabashi Cave, inviting tourists to visit it.

“Nature Monument “Kabashi Cave” Gramsh, an ideal attraction for a day off”, said the Administration of Protected Areas.

The cave is located near Kabashi village at an altitude of 900 m above sea level. The entry into the cave is almost invisible, as it is narrow, but inside it there is a natural treasure. The cave has assumed strange shapes created by Stalactities and Stalagmites, with narrow spaces, extensions, branches and labyrinth underground. Speleological tourism is a very attractive phenomenon for curious visitors of nature and history. /k.s/j.p/p.s./

TIRANA, August 25/ATA/ The cave of Haxhi Ali is still subject of legends and mysteries. Located at an altitude of 18 meters above the sea level, the cave is at the north-western end of Cape of Gjuhëza. It has become a tourist destination and is visited daily by many tourists.

According to the legend, Haxhi Aliu has been a brave sailor from Ulcinj in the early seventeenth century. Together with his son, he took refuge in this cave from where he fought the numerous pirates moving in the Ionian shores while cooperating with the local shepherds and captains of the coast.

The interior of the cave is very large. The cave is about 30 meters long and the depth goes to almost 10 meters.

Not only cruise and diving enthusiasts can find themselves here, but also those who want to see the millennial stalactites on the rocky walls.

The most efficient way to visit this place are naval vessels like ships and boats.

The Karaburun Peninsula has become in recent years one of the most frequented tourist attractions by foreign and domestic tourists due to the natural beauties and the very special places it offers. One of the most beautiful places on this peninsula, where in addition to the amazing history and its mystical appearance, is the cave of Haxhi Ali./k.s/j.p/p.s./
