During 2024, Rozafa Castle, one of the city’s main tourist attractions, was visited by 157,827 visitors. This figure is 25.5% higher than the number of visitors during 2023.

While Lezha Castle received 7,771 visitors during 2024, a figure that, according to statistics, is 70% higher than the previous year.

The data provided by the Shkodra Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage show a great interest of local and foreign visitors in the cultural heritage of these regions. Rozafa Castle and Lezha Castle are becoming increasingly popular tourist destinations.

Shkodra Castle, or as it is otherwise known by the name Rozafa Castle, is one of the most important castles in Albania and beyond. It has a powerful strategic position, controlling a large surrounding territory and consists of three main courtyards that are in the form of stairs, rising one after the other and separated by gates between them.

While Lezha Castle rises on top of a 186-meter-high hill, east of the city. The castle has Illyrian origins. In 1440, it underwent a reconstruction by the Venetians, while in 1522 after the Ottoman conquest it was also rebuilt by them. Minister of Culture Elva Margariti shared today in social media the figures of visitors registered in the January-July period in the castles of the country.

“The castles continue to be the most visited spots by the tourists. This year, the number of visitors is much higher than in the previous years. Thus, in the January-July period, 111,573 local and foreign visitors visited the castles,” Margariti emphasized.

Margariti also made a comparison with the previous years showing a significant increase of visitors to the historical castles during the same period in recent years.

“In January-July 2022, there were 63,731 visitors, in 2021 there were 69,674 visitors and in 2020 there were 24,015 local and foreign visitors,” said Margariti.

Number of visitors to the historic fortresses and castles across the country grew in the first quarter of 2022, Minister of Culture Elva Margariti said Wednesday.

The number of visitors increased to 8326 in the first three months of 2022, up from 6.274 visitors during the same period of the previous year.

Culture Minister invited Albanian and international tourists to visit Albania’s cultural heritage sites as a precious treasure of the Albanian nation.

In addition to its coastline and pristine beaches, Albania is home to many cultural monuments and archaeological parks where culture and history admirers can enjoy a special tour to these sites.
