TIRANA, Jan 6 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha stated on Tuesday that holding free and fair elections in Albania was impossible without a caretaker government, calling for a broad opposition front against Prime Minister Edi Rama’s administration.

Berisha said the opposition’s top priority remained ensuring a credible electoral process and safeguarding the independence of the justice system.

Speaking at a news conference at his party headquarters, Berisha said elections could not be held while Rama remained in office, a claim he said had been borne out not only by the opposition but also by international election observers.

He said the opposition was demanding Rama’s removal and the formation of a technical government to oversee a fair electoral process.

Berisha said the opposition would present its views on the composition of such a government at the appropriate time, but stressed that two conditions were non-negotiable: free elections and the unimpeded functioning of the justice system.

“Justice cannot be blocked,” he said, adding that “any government that interferes with the judiciary undermines the separation of powers and the constitution.”

Berisha also outlined the opposition’s strategy, confirming that street protests would remain its main form of political action.

He said the date of the next protest had not yet been set but was likely to take place before Feb. 20, noting that consultations among opposition parties had already begun.

“There will definitely be a protest. We will not give up,” he said.

Berisha said all opposition parties, without exception, would be invited to join talks aimed at forming a broad opposition front against what he described as a “narco-regime”.

Responding to questions about protest organization, Berisha said party symbols and flags would not hinder unity, but rather motivate supporters.

“What matters is authenticity as a real opposition. All parties can come with their symbols – that is not a problem,” he said.
