TIRANA, May 31 /ATA/The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, presented on Saturday to the media the resolution approved yesterday by the Union of Centrist Democrats and the Centrist Democrat International (IDC-CDI), regarding the 2025 parliamentary elections in Albania.

Berisha said that through this resolution, the IDC-CDI calls on the Albanian authorities to urgently implement the OSCE/ODIHR’s priority recommendations, including those concerning equality in the campaign, the media, and impartial institutions.

The resolution, read by Berisha, calls for an immediate end to political persecution and the full reinstatement of rights for opposition leaders. It also urges the formation of a caretaker government to oversee EU-related reforms and prepare the country for new elections. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for genuine media pluralism and equal media access for all political parties.

Berisha also stated that “the IDC-CDI is calling on its member parties to send a fact-finding and observation mission to Albania to assess the electoral process, meet with relevant stakeholders, and provide an independent evaluation of the elections’ compliance with democratic standards.”

He added that the resolution urges the European Union to tie Albania’s EU accession progress to tangible electoral and democratic reforms, warning that growing authoritarianism and criminal influence in the country pose a serious threat to domestic democracy and regional stability.

Berisha stated that “with this resolution, the opposition in Albania received the strongest international support yet for its just cause.”

“This resolution, backed by 108 political parties—the largest grouping of its kind in the world—condemns the May 11 vote as a disgraceful farce, where fundamental international principles of free elections were systematically violated,” Berisha said. “At this global forum, the Democratic Party’s demands for a caretaker government and new elections have received full support.”

Berisha said that “this resolution is a call to action, a rallying cry to the opposition people to fight and sacrifice, to pay any price for free elections, assuring them that in this battle they are not alone but stand united with centrist and center-right parties across Europe and the world.”

Berisha said that the resolution, supported by concrete evidence, condemns the violation of international election principles.

He explained that this marks the second resolution, following an initial one in October that warned of the electoral farce and its many flaws. The latest resolution, grounded in reports from international institutions released after the elections, presents concrete evidence condemning violations of internationally recognized election standards. “While the first raised the alarm, this one formally denounces the conduct of the farce,” he added.
