During a visit to the facility, Rama and Health and Social Welfare Minister Klodiana Spahiu inspected the upgraded cardiac surgery department, which now has 38 beds, up from 35, across 15 rooms.

The new operating block includes five theatres – two for vascular surgery, two for cardiac surgery and a hybrid theatre – while a dedicated sterile-procedure room has been added to reduce the need for such procedures to be performed in intensive care.

The government head said the country’s largest hospital centre should face no further budget constraints in completing its infrastructure needs.

“We should address them all through the 2027 budget,” Rama said.

He said a 1,400-space parking facility at the hospital entrance would allow vehicles to be removed from the hospital grounds, which would then be transformed into a park over the next two years.

Rama also said the government was negotiating a partnership between QSUT and a major international medical institution that could involve hospital management cooperation and exchanges between doctors.

The plan also includes a private facility within the hospital, which Rama said could provide doctors with additional income while generating further revenue for the hospital.

“We are in negotiations and have several options. The discussions are continuing and I believe we will soon establish this partnership,” he said.

Spahiu and Rama also presented certificates of appreciation to doctors and professors who have contributed to the development of cardiac surgery services at QSUT.

Prime Minister Edi Rama said Wednesday that the new facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by highly specialized teams focused on heart surgery, vascular care, and intensive care services.

The government head underlined that over 1,000 surgical procedures will be performed annually, and the new facility will employ 112 medical professionals, and will provide round-the-clock emergency care.

He emphasized that the hospital will offer advanced services in neonatal and pediatric congenital cardiac surgery, both elective and emergency, ensuring comprehensive and specialized care for the most complex cases.

Construction of the four-story building, covering 4,000 square meters, is expected to be completed this month by June. The new hospital, with a capacity of 80 beds, is expected to significantly boost Albania’s capacity to deliver advanced cardiovascular care and marks a major milestone in the country’s public healthcare modernization efforts.
