Sofjan Jaupaj, the Minister of Environment, remarked that the project is the culmination of extensive efforts and negotiations that began in Berlin and were finalized through collaboration between the Albanian and German governments.

He highlighted that the “Green Vjosa” initiative will enhance the capacities of local governments along the Vjosa River, support community-driven initiatives, and create an integrated model for environmental management, which could serve as a benchmark for other regions of the country, further advancing Albania’s European integration process, particularly in relation to Chapter 27.
The “Green Vjosa” agreement, signed yesterday in Tirana by the Minister of Environment, Sofjan Jaupaj, and the German Ambassador to Albania, Karl Bergner, aims to promote sustainable, inclusive, and nature-based regional development within the watershed area of the Vjosa National Park.
The project, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ Albania, includes strengthening the park’s administration through training and experience exchange, promoting local businesses and nature-based products and services, as well as fostering regional cooperation between the administration, the economic sector, and civil society.
The project will be implemented from 2026 to 2029 and aims to generate income and create job opportunities for the local community by ensuring sustainable and inclusive nature management.
