TIRANA, October 15/ATA/ During the last decade, Albania has significantly improved the social support system for individuals who are blind.

On White Cane Safety Day, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that currently, people who are blind are supported with an annually indexed monthly payment, as well as free of charge education, health and social services.

The prime minister also emphasized that this category is supported with a disability pension, compensation for energy and telephony, as well as tax incentives.

“Join us too, so that your voice becomes their eye-sight”, is the call of PM Rama on this awareness day.

In Albania, there are 14,945 individuals registered as blind or people who have vision impairment, of whom 262 are children. There are also 3,814 caregivers at their service.

Currently, the government supports them with monthly payments indexed annually; provides support for education of 200-300%; free of charge health and social services; disability pension; compensation for energy and telephony and many other tax incentives.

Meanwhile, there is work underway for more access to quality education, for employment with dignity and a totally independent life.

White Cane Safety Day is a day to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane. /m.m/r.e/a.f/p.s./
