TIRANA, Oct 12 /ATA/ – Albania will set up a national cancer network to unify oncology treatment standards and ensure full access to cancer medicines, Health and Social Welfare Minister Evis Sala said on Sunday during Prime Minister Edi Rama’s weekly podcast “Flasim” (“Let’s Talk”).

Sala, recently appointed to lead the ministry, outlined her main priorities, emphasizing that reforms in the health sector would deliver tangible results “not within one year, but over several years.”

She said one of the government’s key goals is to reform the Health Insurance Fund, to make the system more transparent and results-based.

“Medicine is free for citizens, but it has a cost. Building a system that incorporates real costs, insurance, and transparency is essential for a health sector focused on measurable outcomes,” Sala said.

Health Minister, who previously worked in oncology, announced plans to organize a National Cancer Network applying uniform protocols and standards across all hospitals.

“We must bring the service to the patient, not the patient to the service. Primary care must be linked to diagnostics, and hospitals should only handle the necessary cases,” she said.

Rama added that Albania is poised for a “historic transformation” in healthcare, thanks to new technologies and artificial intelligence.

“Everything from the patient’s home to the operating room involves administration, and technology now allows us to make leaps that would otherwise take years,” the government head said.
