TIRANA, November 21/ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated today that there is still hope for the Albanian language to survive the barbarism of this century.

In his speech delivered at the National Assembly for the Albanian language, “Challenges of the Albanian language in the XXI century”, Rama held in high esteem all those who were involved in launching the great Albanian language competition for the school students.

“While appreciating the level of the competition and seeing all those students compete to confirm language efficiency, even more so when they live under the pressure against the Albanian language as a result of social networks, I thought there was still hope”.

“There is still hope for the Albanian language to survive the barbarism of this century, which threatens languages as a whole and the very roots of humanity in general,” said Rama.

“In 1972, I was in the second grade of the school. Then, Eqerem Ҁabej published an essay on the origin of the word Albania. It is a long essay that starts from the ancient maps of Alexandria. They are the first to put Albanoi and Albanopolis on the map that ends with Manastir. Çabej writes in his essay that Albania has had many names, but the language has always been one. In regard to the name of the country and the inhabitants: shqiptar, Shqipëri (Albania), this name, writes Çabeji, remains questionable. There are thoughts that it stems from the name of the eagle (shqiponja), so the Albanians got the name of this bird since the time of Skanderbeg. Also, while referring to the words of Plutarch, after the victory over the Macedonians, Pyrrhus was celebrated with the epithet eagle (shqiponja)”, said Rama.

And further on, added the prime minister, “We have never failed to challenge even the great Çabeji in search of extracting from the past a glory that, in fact, for the sake of the truth, it would be enough for us to keep it firmly and not fall in present-day’s fantasies and delusions”. /j.p/p.s./
