TIRANA, Dec 3 /ATA/ – Tax administration announced Tuesday that a country-wide crackdown on the widespread practice of underreporting wages is nearing completion.

For years, businesses have been declaring only the minimum wage for their staff, while paying the rest in cash off the books.

According to the General Directorate of Taxation, inspections will be carried out in 7 000 high-risk taxpayers that haven’t reflected after a second notification forwarded by the tax administration.

The General Directorate of Taxation urged businesses to declare real wage of their workers.

“If the real wages are declared now and the last month’s declarations are corrected, the identified high-risk businesses will be exempted from tax inspections,” tax administration said.

Authorities have joined forces to tackle the underreporting wages practice, targeting businesses suspected of under-declaring salaries, a practice that deprives workers of full social and health benefits and limits their future financial opportunities.
