TIRANA, March 29 /ATA/ At the launch of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, which was attended by transport experts from the German GIZ agency, representatives of city and intercity transport companies, as well as mobility experts from the European Union, Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj, said that Tirana is a city that grows by 20-25 thousand inhabitants per year, which brings about an increase of 8 thousand apartments and 8 thousand cars.

Due to these numbers Tirana is coping with a challenge for mobility, which all big cities are facing, be it Athens, Rome or Milan.
“Sometimes we become victims of our own success. If we were a dirty city, a city without economy, without success, a city without hope, without high salaries, a city without art and culture, without sports year and youth year activities, without tourists, we would not be grappling with these problems. As long as Tirana is the main point of gravity and success in Albania, or in the entire Albanian nation and in the region, and as long as Tirana grows at these rates, this is normal,” said Veliaj.

The mayor added that people who drive in Tirana are only 24.7% of citizens and over 51% of citizens walk. “Those who use car are only 24.7%, but since the car takes up more space and has a horn, and an individual cannot make the same noise, then we automatically give more importance to a noisy minority and not necessarily what, statistically, is the majority of the population. So, more than 51% of citizens walk, while those who use the bus are 17.45% and 4.2% by bicycle”, he continued.

As for mobility in the city of Tirana, the mayor said that the trends have changed and that the residents of Tirana are moving more on foot or by bicycle or by bus, thanks to the investments and the standard that this city has set.
