TIRANA, Aug 30 /ATA/ – Albania saw a significant increase in the area authorized for construction projects, although the number of construction permits issued by the relevant authorities decreased in the second quarter of 2024.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics, INSTAT, reveal a 29.4% increase in the area covered by new building permits compared to the same period last year, marking a record high.

In its latest report on the construction permits, INSTAT said that the number of approved construction permits fell 30.5% year-on-year to 354 in the second quarter of the year from 509 permits issued for new buildings during the same period of the previous year.

The total area authorized for construction has expanded to 844.137 m2 in the second quarter from 652.136 m2 approved in the second quarter of last year, registering an increase of 29.4 %.

The approximate value of building permits issued for buildings and civil engineering works in the second quarter of 2024 is estimated 33.7 billion lek, up from 24.4 bilion lek during the same period of 2023, increasing 38.1%.

Tirana region has played a pivotal role in this growth, contributing 36% to the overall increase in permit areas. This highlights a significant trend towards larger developments in the capital.

Tirana and Durres lead for the high number of permits with 137 and 86 permits, respectively.

In the second quarter, residential buildings led the permit issuance with 254 approvals. Permits were also granted for industrial facilities, hotels, commercial structures, and infrastructure projects, including roads and water supply lines.

This data illustrates a dynamic shift in Albania’s construction sector, with a focus on more extensive and ambitious projects reshaping the urban landscape.
