TIRANA, April 4 /ATA/ – The blessing of bread and food on the eve of Easter (Holy Saturday) is a traditional Christian custom, celebrating the end of Lenten fasting and the resurrection of Jesus. Families bring baskets containing symbolic foods—such as bread, eggs, meat, and salt—to church to be blessed by a priest with holy water.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared footage from this special ceremony held at the Diocese of Sapa in Vau e Dejës, Nënshat and Blinisht. This rite has also been held in other Catholic churches throughout the country.

The prime minister quoted: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst” (John 6:35). It means that believing in and following Jesus satisfies the deepest longings of the human soul. /p.s./

TIRANA, March 15/ATA/ Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Frida Krifca held a meeting today with representatives of the Association of Bread, Dough and Pastry Production, at the premises of the Ministry of Agriculture. They discussed the progress of this sector, the needs they have and the vision to support this industry.

Krifca emphasized that the bread production industry in the country is one of the most important sectors not only for food security, but also for employment.

The minister said that bread producers in Albania are well-organized in an association of their own.

“The businesses of this sector produce 100% artisanal bread with traditional recipes that are well-liked by consumers and this industry makes an important contribution to the employment of young people and women”, said Krifca.

Krifca expressed her support for the producers of this industry who have a long tradition saying that the government will provide a certain value to that recipe by protecting, certifying and promoting this recipe internationally.

Krifca expressed her willingness to cooperate with the entrepreneurs of this sector and gave the idea of organizing a forum dedicated to this industry, to discuss bread production, as well as the possibly of organizing a “Bread Fair”.

She emphasized that the need of our consumers is to see that in this sector there is innovation, tradition, but also production diversity.

Gëzim Peshkopia, the chairman of the Association of Doughs and Pastries, gave a brief description of the association which was established in 1998.

“Entrepreneurs of this sector are spread throughout Albania and it is represented by the most prominent producers of pastry, bread and dough”, he said.

“The association has carried out real studies on the production of bread according to the areas. There has also been an article in a large magazine in Germany about the bread produced in Albania”, emphasized Peshkopia, as he evaluated the discussion table with Minister Krifca, for a new boost in the progress of the work of this industry./r.e/p.s./
