TIRANA, Oct 8 /ATA/ – Albanian President Bajram Begaj has affirmed Albania’s strong commitment to regional stability and speeding up the European Union integration of the Southeastern Europe.

Addressing the annual Brdo-Brijuni Process Summit of heads of state that is taking place this year in the Montenegrin town of Tivat, President Begaj remains steadfast in its commitment to regional stability and sustainable development and that the perspective of European integration remains at the core of the country’s efforts.

The heads of state participants of the Brdo-Brijuni Process discussed strengthening regional stability and cooperation, accelerating the process of accession to the European Union of South-East Europe countries, the retention of young people through better opportunities and adaptation to the goals of the European Green Plan.

“The European Union must proactively address specific needs and the challenges facing the Western Balkans,” Begaj said, emphasizing such a proactive approach would include acceleration of infrastructure projects that would connect and bring the region closer to the rest of Europe, improve trade relations and integrate regional economies into the wider EU market.

While stressing the importance of the second Albania-EU intergovernmental conference, due to be held on October 15 for the first chapter of membership negotiations, President Begaj described it as an encouraging signal for the Western Balkan countries.

The heads of state participating in the summit agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation and accelerate Western Balkan integration into the European Union as the most promising and irreplaceable path towards a complete, free and peaceful Europe.

Meetings at the summit of the Brdo-Brijuni Process have been held for years at the initiative of Croatia and Slovenia as members of the European Union, with the aim of improving mutual cooperation between countries in South-East Europe and accelerating the process of European integration of the remaining countries in the region, some of which are already negotiating membership in the European Union or have candidate status for EU membership.
