TIRANA, Dec 28 /ATA/- Albania has increased staffing and security measures at border crossing points to ensure smooth passenger and vehicle flows during the year-end holiday period, police said.

Senior officials from the State Police’s Border and Migration and Public Security departments, Saimir Muçaj and Dhimitraq Ziu, inspected the Kakavijë crossing on Sunday as part of a nationwide review of holiday measures.

Public Security Department head Dhimitraq Ziu said traffic monitoring had been stepped up using smart technologies and mobile patrols, urging drivers to respect speed limits, avoid drink-driving and refrain from unsafe overtaking. He also called on parents not to allow underage children to drive.

Police patrols have been reinforced nationwide, with additional coordination planned with municipal police during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Special units, including the National Security Force and RENEA, remain on standby.

Ziu said checks had also been intensified to prevent the illegal sale and use of fireworks and pyrotechnics.

Border and Migration Department Director Saimir Muçaj said additional counters and police officers had been deployed, particularly at high-traffic crossings with Greece, where operations have been running at full capacity for the past two weeks.

He added that cooperation with neighbouring countries, especially Greece, had been strengthened and simplified border-crossing procedures applied where necessary. Police Cooperation Centres are operating around the clock.

Authorities reported a 10.5% increase in cross-border traffic compared with the same period last year, involving both Albanian citizens and foreign visitors.
